Get some Visual Truth up ya.

So I had this assignment right. It was terrible and horrid and made me lose copious amounts of sleep. But I did it.

It was called 'Visual Truth' and it asked whether the camera was an object of truth, and what role colour played in our reading of an image.

What BS.

Anyway, I shot my housemate Holly, who is well known around these parts for being lacking in the stature. I used wide angles and depth of field to show different ways of portraying her... as well as different colour schemes.

Raindrops + Sunshowers

It's 2am.

My room is warm, the oil heater is bubbling away, the drying rack is bowing under the weight of my wet jeans.

It's raining outside, the windows are fogged up with condensation.

I can hear my clock ticking away, $10, K Mart. There is that damn mouse that got chased into my room this evening, I can hear it moving in those plastic bags.

Note to self: remove plastic bags.

I wrote myself a memo for the morning. Even though it's been at least half an hour, I can still smell the Sharpie ink.

It's one of those melancholy moments, where the night light is on and the room is bathed in the soporific, orange light.

iTunes is playing DJ Shadow, and Massive Attack, and you lie here, in your safe little room with the door locked, and everyone else asleep. And you wonder if there is some one, in another part of the world , or even another universe, that's feeling the same way.

I would like to have a coffee. And even a cigarette. And really I could. But it would probably send everything out of sync.

And I have to be at class at 9am. So maybe not.

Digital photography tomorrow morning. Then Art History. I had a week to do those readings. I didn't, but thats a whole other story.

I have to start thinking black and white. Assignment theme is 'Open'.

I'm going to wake up in the morning, and trudge over the hill, feet wet with the dew, and i'm going to sit in that class, barely awake, and we'll probably have some stupid task to do, like photoshop an alpacas head onto George Bush or something.

And I'll go to class. And I'll go home. And I'll wait for it to finally become night. Night is when it's quiet. And I can just be alone.

And I'll repeat it. Again. And again.

HtoPtotheArrytotheOtter

I don't think there will ever be another phenomenon quite like Harry Potter in our lifetime. Never before has there been a book, and consequently a movie series, that quite speaks to us like the stories within the pages of the Harry Potter books. And I don't want there to be.

You either love Harry Potter or you don't. For those who do, the Wizarding world is as rich as our own, so tantalizingly close, yet so very very far away. To quote Dumbledore "Of course it's all in your head, but why should that mean it's not real?"

Truly, we finished our adventures back in 2007, as we devoured the last book and were left with that competing feeling of utter sadness and uplifting joy that the ending of such a series brought us. The publicity machine has spun into gear once again to promote the last movie.

The books brought a different experience to the films; this electric excitement as the books were released, where you knew hundreds of people were poring over the same words as you, picking up the same spelling mistakes ("fug" anyone?), laughing at the same jokes and hearts leaping at the same twists and turns that wove their way through the pages.

* * *
Harry, Ron, Hermione, Ginny, Fred and George, Lupin and Tonks, Mad Eye Moody, Molly and Arthur, Bill and Fleur; we grew up with these people, most of us were the same age as the younger characters when the books first came out.
Through Harry, we leave the muggle world as he does, and experience the strange, enchanting and dangerous Wizarding world as he does, so that when the journey is over for Harry, we feel that we have grown with him.
When you think about it, these characters have been with us for years longer than half the friends you have right now, who are of course super important to us as well :p Boy or Girl, we all 'get' Harry.

As he experiences the dizzying highs and devastating lows, so do we. In the books, comes a lot of people's first real experience of losing some one that you truly love and care about. The real humanity of the books, is what makes them such a captivating peek into this world that is surely just an enchanted brick wall away.

Harry Potter Tumblrs.

There are a mother truck load of Harry Potter tumblrs, which im not complaining about. They're good for sating the cravings and staving off the post-potter depression.

All was well.

15 Things

It's the 15th of June, 15:15. So let's talk about 15 things.

1. It's really kind of cold at the moment. I'm at Caitlin's, in Bombala, resting them weary bones after the long weekend at the Snowy Mountain's of Music festival at Perisher. Which brings me to the snow...

2. I lived in Orange for about 13 years, so the cold was something I was pretty used to. But i've never seen snow like what was up at the mountain. Drifts so deep I sank down to my knees, icicles that hung a metre long, the leaves on the trees encased in ice, tinkling in the alpine breeze. How poetic. It really was very beautiful. I think i'm in love.

3. The music festival was good, exhausting though. For some reason they spread the venues out over the whole freaking resort, so there was much trudging through slushy snow and climbing slippery embankments while juggling a couple of thousand dollars of camera gear. One of the venues you had to take a ski lift to get to! Which brings me to my next story...
4. The ski lift. Oh, the ski lift. So I leave the gig at the top of the hill, and the only way back down is to either snowboard down the hill, or take the ski lift up about 100 metres more, before it headed back down. Because I am the best snowboarder in the world, i thought i wouldn't upstage everyone on the slopes, and i headed for the ski lift. On the way up, I missed a lot of shots of the view, because I had my camera tucked away, so I thought, hey, ill get the shots on the way down.
Oh for such luck. The lift started going descending at a pretty fucking rapid pace, so i was holding on for dear life onto the freezing bar in front of me, while trying to not let my camera fall the 300 metres down to the snow and rocks below. It was then i realised my car keys were working their way out of my unzipped jacket pocket. Fuck.
So in an amazing act of balance and dexterity, I wedged my camera between my knees, holding onto the camera bag with one hand, and tried to do the pocket zip up with the other hand. Apparently the safety bar at the front doesn't stay down unless you hold it down. I learnt that the hard way, as I lost about 10 years of my life out of fright as the stupid flew up over my head. And then the snow storm started. Massive ice flakes are pelting me in the face. I don't have a spare hand to put down my hood, lest the bar fly up again and i plunge to my death or, worse than that, drop my camera. I've never been so cold in my life.

Post snow storm descent.

And it was at that moment that the lift decided it would be a great time to stop, with a jolt that almost sent all my precariously balanced shit toppling.

Now... I'm not scared of much, only balloons, party poppers, dull red lights and any kind of confrontation,
but I have never felt more scared in my life, as I was perched up on the cold, wet seat, not able to see 10 metres in front because of the swirling snow. I think I might have blocked out the rest of the trip, because next thing I knew I was on the ground. Never before have I been so happy to walk on the slushy ground.

Still, I did better than the members of the Orange Blossom band, who had to do that same trip, except they had to carry a double bass up :p
I'll continue this post later. Im going to try and clean out my car. It will probably be more time and cost effective to cut my losses and buy a new one :p

Spruce Bruce loose vaucluse

This blog needs a shake up. I've let it go loose and wild, it needs to be reigned in, and taught how to eat without having it's elbows on the table. I'm going to say that I'll post once a week minimum, I think that's an achievable goal. Once a day is just asking for trouble.

Ps. This counts as today's.

Pps. The graphic novel for 'I am legend' is very different to the movie.
